Definition Of Pathos

Pathos is a rhetorical device that appeals to the emotions of an audience. When a writer, speaker, or advertiser uses pathos, they are trying to make you feel something: sympathy, grief, outrage, hope. They know that emotion is one of the most powerful ways to move people toward a particular response or belief. You can spot pathos when a text seems to be working harder to make you feel than to make you think.

Significance Of Pathos

Pathos is one of three core rhetorical appeals, alongside ethos (credibility) and logos (logic), and understanding how they work together is key to analyzing any persuasive text. On its own, pathos is neither good nor bad. At its best it gives an argument genuine human weight, connecting abstract ideas to real emotional stakes. At its worst it bypasses your critical thinking entirely, getting you to agree with something before you've had a chance to actually evaluate it. Learning to recognize pathos means learning to ask: am I being moved, or am I being manipulated?

Coca-Cola Christmas Commercials

Every year, Coca-Cola's Christmas ads sell very little about the drink itself. What they sell is warmth: family reunions, snow-lit windows, the feeling of belonging. That's pathos. The emotional atmosphere does the persuading so that by the time you see the product, it's already wrapped in good feeling. Next time you watch one, try asking yourself what the ad would look like if it had to rely on facts alone.

"I Have a Dream" — Martin Luther King Jr.

King's speech is one of the most celebrated uses of pathos in the English language, and it works because the emotional appeal is inseparable from the moral argument. When King describes his children being judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, he isn't just making a political point. He's making you feel the weight of what's at stake. The emotion carries the argument but does not replace it.

To Kill a Mockingbird — Harper Lee

Atticus Finch's closing argument to the jury is a masterclass in courtroom pathos. Rather than relying solely on the facts of the case, Atticus appeals directly to the jury's sense of decency, shame, and shared humanity, asking them to see Tom Robinson not as a category but as a person. Lee uses the moment to show both the power and the limits of emotional appeal: Atticus moves the reader completely, but the jury remains unmoved. That gap is the novel's tragedy.
